Have you ever felt like you're on the brink of something transformative, yet the scars of your past seem to hold you back? You're about to meet Jeanita Castille, whose compelling narrative from the projects to the spotlight of entrepreneurship and photography is nothing short of a masterclass in resilience and purpose. This episode peels back the layers of a journey marked by sheltered beginnings, the courage to face social uncertainties, and a quest for self-discovery that led to the birth of Power Magazine. The road to self-empowerment is often paved with trials that test our faith and purpose.   Her story serves as a beacon for anyone seeking to harness their trauma as a source of strength and inspiration.

As we celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that Jeanita embodies, we traverse her evolution from a focused brand manager to a photographer with a mission—to capture the essence of women through her lens. Her narrative is not just a lesson in pivoting with purpose but a call to action for all of us to recognize the power of our contributions. Her experiences underscore the beauty in heeding divine assignments and the magnetic force they exert on our life's direction—a potent reminder that your story, your voice, carries a weight that can shape the world.

Don't hold It in but let's just talk about It.

Hey, let's jump right in.

00:00:59.451 --> 00:01:02.575
Welcome back to another episode of Lets Just Talk About it podcast.

00:01:02.575 --> 00:01:12.227
Today, I have special guest brand manager, author, publisher, pusher, coach, photographer, minister and founder of Power Magazine, Jeanita Castille, on with me today.

00:01:12.227 --> 00:01:12.888
How's it going?

00:01:13.170 --> 00:01:13.570
Great.

00:01:13.570 --> 00:01:14.513
How are you Doing?

00:01:14.575 --> 00:01:14.896
good.

00:01:14.896 --> 00:01:17.944
Thank you so much for being a part of this episode.

00:01:17.944 --> 00:01:18.807
I appreciate it.

00:01:19.128 --> 00:01:19.909
Yeah, absolutely.

00:01:19.909 --> 00:01:22.403
Thank you for having me, absolutely.

00:01:22.423 --> 00:01:32.646
Jeanita, I love to jump right into my interviews to have those genuine conversations with genuine people just like yourself, and I usually start off with this question when are you from?

00:01:33.661 --> 00:01:36.468
I am from Norfolk Virginia.

00:01:37.170 --> 00:01:38.152
Wow, what part of Norfolk.

00:01:39.079 --> 00:01:45.593
So I grew up right in the Camp Estella area, Diggs Park, right in the projects.

00:01:46.093 --> 00:01:47.942
Got you Shout out to Norfolk and Diggs Park.

00:01:47.942 --> 00:01:48.763
I'm familiar with it.

00:01:48.864 --> 00:01:53.393
Absolutely yeah, yep, wow, that's where I grew up.

00:01:53.593 --> 00:01:55.206
Got you, how was that for you growing up?

00:01:55.206 --> 00:01:58.828
You know everybody has their own experience growing up.

00:01:58.828 --> 00:01:59.712
How was it for you?

00:02:02.121 --> 00:02:03.507
Back in the day it was the norm.

00:02:03.507 --> 00:02:08.263
My mother was raised in the same projects.

00:02:08.263 --> 00:02:10.625
Her mother was raised in the same project.

00:02:10.625 --> 00:02:23.473
Most of my family had grew up there and so my mother was a single parent and she raised my sister and I separately, because my sister and I are 11 years apart.

00:02:23.473 --> 00:02:25.735
So it was the norm.

00:02:26.635 --> 00:02:28.056
I was kind of sheltered.

00:02:28.056 --> 00:02:37.588
So when I tell people from there, if you don't know me, you know I'm not saying you wouldn't know, as if I'm trying to like hide that I'm from.

00:02:37.588 --> 00:02:39.013
You know that I grew up in a project.

00:02:39.013 --> 00:02:42.627
That's not a shame, that's my background.

00:02:42.627 --> 00:02:44.352
But I was sheltered.

00:02:44.352 --> 00:02:51.352
So if you didn't know my mother, you didn't know my family, you didn't see me, unless you saw me in school, because my mother was very strict.

00:02:51.352 --> 00:02:54.426
She didn't let me hang out, she didn't let me go anywhere.

00:02:54.426 --> 00:02:56.692
I could hardly go on the porch.

00:02:56.692 --> 00:03:02.600
So if you didn't know, if you didn't know what was going on in my household, it was really close to the family.

00:03:02.600 --> 00:03:04.784
It was like you know where were you?

00:03:04.784 --> 00:03:07.871
You know you weren't hanging with this person, that person, this group, that group.

00:03:07.871 --> 00:03:09.433
So yeah, wow.

00:03:10.201 --> 00:03:14.210
So we get older and oftentimes we can't wait to leave the house.

00:03:14.210 --> 00:03:18.947
You know we're old right so how was that for you when you finally, you know got out of the house?

00:03:20.169 --> 00:03:20.509
yeah.

00:03:20.509 --> 00:03:23.663
So one would think that that's what I saw as well.

00:03:23.663 --> 00:03:27.512
You know, when girls left the house who were sheltered, they just went.

00:03:27.512 --> 00:03:34.471
Look, wow, I can't say that necessarily happened for me.

00:03:34.471 --> 00:03:39.331
When I left the house, I felt like a fish out of water.

00:03:39.331 --> 00:03:43.390
I felt like a peon in a world that was so big.

00:03:43.390 --> 00:04:04.710
I felt like the world was crushing me because I didn't know how to socialize, while I was a very good student, I did well in school, and so, upon leaving the house, I went to college Well, norfolk State, right down the street, but I moved on campus, and so campus, everybody knows it's a world in itself.

00:04:04.710 --> 00:04:07.828
Street, but I moved on campus, and so campus, everybody knows it's a world in itself.

00:04:07.828 --> 00:04:10.076
So it doesn't matter if you live in the same town or the same city as the school.

00:04:10.076 --> 00:04:15.116
When you go on campus, you meet people from all over the world, and so it's a world inside of a city.

00:04:15.116 --> 00:04:18.588
And so it crushed me because I didn't know how to make friends.

00:04:18.588 --> 00:04:22.463
I was reserved, I just was, like you know, very uncomfortable.

00:04:22.723 --> 00:04:25.992
Wow, so you had to learn how to communicate with people outside.

00:04:25.992 --> 00:04:27.797
I'm still learning, you're still learning.

00:04:27.817 --> 00:04:29.584
Yeah, I'm still learning Gotcha.

00:04:29.584 --> 00:04:34.470
Yeah, yep, yep, I had to learn how to come out of the box.

00:04:34.850 --> 00:04:36.343
Wow, is this hard for you?

00:04:36.343 --> 00:04:37.648
Like to do the interview now?

00:04:39.062 --> 00:04:39.745
Oh no, not at all.

00:04:39.745 --> 00:04:46.834
I do huge events, I do a lot of things and my motto is go big or go home.

00:04:46.834 --> 00:04:56.651
So if I do something, you know, I want everybody and their mama to come out, and so if I'm in control of the situation, I can put on for days.

00:04:56.651 --> 00:05:04.766
I can stand and talk in front of people and actually, you know, in school they would always pick me to public speak.

00:05:04.766 --> 00:05:06.266
You know, in school they would always pick me to public speak.

00:05:06.286 --> 00:05:14.872
I won first place at, like, a contest at Botanical Gardens, first place in the whole city of Norfolk for best public speaker when I was a kid.

00:05:14.872 --> 00:05:20.538
So if I'm in control, I can talk to thousands of people at once.

00:05:20.538 --> 00:05:23.925
What do you mean If I'm in control of the room?

00:05:23.925 --> 00:05:45.375
If it's something that I've gathered, if it's something where I set the tone for it, um, you know, if, if I can speak in and gain control of the room, you know, but going to places, like going into crowds, where I have to conform to what's going on, that's where I have.

00:05:45.375 --> 00:05:54.228
Yeah, yeah, that's where the problem comes, because you know that is still, you know, a bit of an issue for me, but I'm working through that, even at.

00:05:54.228 --> 00:06:03.283
You know my age now I'm still working through being social and and learning people and people learning me, you know, I think that's ongoing.

00:06:04.125 --> 00:06:05.490
Yeah, and it's just the grace of God.

00:06:05.490 --> 00:06:06.762
You know it's like.

00:06:06.762 --> 00:06:12.329
You know, when God calls you to do something, you know those things don't hold you back.

00:06:12.329 --> 00:06:15.228
You know he doesn't allow your past to dictate.

00:06:15.228 --> 00:06:31.439
You know your mission, absolutely the mission and assignment that he has for you, and so it's only in his strength that I get to do those things, because he gave me those ideas, gave, and so it's only in his strength that I get to do those things because he gave me those ideas, gave me ideas for the women's events that I do.

00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:33.387
He gave me the idea to stand in front of people and you know to talk or to come up with things.

00:06:33.387 --> 00:06:44.312
I'm a creative, so I come up with a lot of stuff and so, um, I go in his strength to do that and then, after I go back in my little, my little pocket, yeah, I heard somebody say he puts his super on your natural.

00:06:44.492 --> 00:06:48.543
So absolutely right absolutely.

00:06:49.244 --> 00:07:00.110
There's so many young girls that I know you inspire them, you know, because they feel insecure, like they can't do or be outspoken or do things that are creative.

00:07:00.110 --> 00:07:06.752
What would you say to a young lady right now if you was to meet her and she reminds you of you growing up, what would you say?

00:07:07.220 --> 00:07:09.545
Well, I would just take her back to.

00:07:09.545 --> 00:07:11.711
You know, when I found my voice.

00:07:11.711 --> 00:07:17.252
You know I didn't find my voice until I came into discovering my purpose.

00:07:17.252 --> 00:07:21.932
You know, when you discover who you are, you know you become unstoppable.

00:07:21.932 --> 00:07:25.321
You know because now you have meaning, now you have substance.

00:07:25.321 --> 00:07:31.233
Unstoppable, you know because you, now you have meaning, now you have substance, now you have value and no one and nothing can take that away from you.

00:07:31.634 --> 00:07:38.338
You know I went through a lot of bad relationships or you know a lot of failed friendships and things like that.

00:07:38.338 --> 00:07:40.603
You know the people used to take advantage of me.

00:07:40.603 --> 00:07:44.310
I used to feel like like I don't have any direction in life.

00:07:44.310 --> 00:07:53.807
But it wasn't until, you know, I really started seeking God, because that's where your substance comes from, that's where your value comes from, that's where your meaning comes from.

00:07:53.807 --> 00:08:00.031
It's like you can't live a life of meaning if you don't go to the person or to the thing that made you.

00:08:00.031 --> 00:08:01.180
You know what I'm saying.

00:08:01.180 --> 00:08:08.613
And so when I started putting God first in my life, when I started seeking him, you know with Tim who revealed to me OK, this is the plan for your life.

00:08:08.613 --> 00:08:13.411
You know, and so that's my advice to everybody Seek God.

00:08:13.411 --> 00:08:13.961
You know.

00:08:13.961 --> 00:08:17.048
If you're looking for meaning, if you're looking for, you know.

00:08:17.048 --> 00:08:19.012
What am I made for, what's my purpose.

00:08:19.012 --> 00:08:20.141
You know anything.

00:08:20.141 --> 00:08:21.983
You go to God and he'll tell you.

00:08:22.124 --> 00:08:29.233
You powerful, and so, when I found out, when I discovered who I was in him, I was able to conquer.

00:08:29.254 --> 00:08:32.907
Wow when you say discover, that means knowing your value.

00:08:32.907 --> 00:08:33.688
Knowing your worth.

00:08:34.230 --> 00:08:38.927
You know what I mean Knowing my worth, but not worth as you know I've.

00:08:38.927 --> 00:08:41.894
You know, anyone gave it to me or I gave it to myself.

00:08:41.894 --> 00:08:44.687
My worth is because of Jesus.

00:08:44.687 --> 00:08:49.368
You know what I'm saying, and so, um, and you know, giving it all back to him.

00:08:49.368 --> 00:08:54.166
I don't care what I do or what we do in this earth, it all comes from him, you know.

00:08:54.166 --> 00:09:06.539
So I always put it back on God, you know, and so on, cause I never want to be boastful, I never want to, always want to be humble, you know.

00:09:06.539 --> 00:09:08.304
And so when I discover who I am in him, you know, that's when I, when I feel confident.

00:09:08.304 --> 00:09:10.110
I'm most confident when I'm doing what God has told me to do.

00:09:10.630 --> 00:09:11.514
Your inspiration.

00:09:11.514 --> 00:09:12.221
I can hear it.

00:09:12.221 --> 00:09:17.472
I can hear it and I always say you never know who's listening, who you're going to speak to.

00:09:17.472 --> 00:09:22.428
You know, listen to your story of how you overcome and how you find your value in God.

00:09:22.428 --> 00:09:23.650
That's powerful, right?

00:09:23.650 --> 00:09:25.573
Yeah, I love that.

00:09:25.573 --> 00:09:27.985
So what things excite you the most?

00:09:29.389 --> 00:09:30.552
What excites me?

00:09:30.552 --> 00:09:34.282
A lot of people would say I'm a very serious person.

00:09:34.282 --> 00:09:41.043
I mean, I do love to joke and play around, but as far as like, when it comes to life, I take it very seriously.

00:09:41.043 --> 00:09:46.815
And the thing that came with discovering who I was, I just went full throttle.

00:09:46.815 --> 00:09:48.727
Like you know, this is what I'm doing.

00:09:48.727 --> 00:09:49.974
This is what God told me to do.

00:09:49.974 --> 00:09:51.299
Nothing's going to stop me.

00:09:51.299 --> 00:09:53.403
Get out of my way, Move, you know.

00:09:55.548 --> 00:09:55.847
Yeah.

00:09:56.688 --> 00:10:01.722
Because I was so passionate about, you know, just doing what God says.

00:10:01.722 --> 00:10:04.469
I'm very passionate about timing.

00:10:04.469 --> 00:10:09.505
I'm very passionate about, you know, when God says, do you know, do it.

00:10:09.505 --> 00:10:14.644
I'm very passionate about execution and that's one of the no procrastination.

00:10:14.644 --> 00:10:32.135
I'm not saying that I don't get stuck in seasons where I'm wondering or I'm doubting, but I can say that I'm known for execution because I believe when God places something on your heart for you to do, you know that he has a timing for that to happen.

00:10:32.820 --> 00:10:39.774
And a lot of people their you know mission, their purpose is also connected to what you're doing.

00:10:39.774 --> 00:10:47.551
So if you don't do what you're doing, then you may be holding somebody else up Right, and so I'm very serious about doing those things.

00:10:47.551 --> 00:10:49.988
And so that's really what I think about every day.

00:10:49.988 --> 00:10:52.889
All day it's like okay, god, am I doing what you told me to do?

00:10:52.889 --> 00:10:54.311
Am I doing it right?

00:10:54.311 --> 00:10:57.561
You know, fix my character so I can be a better person.

00:10:57.561 --> 00:10:58.581
You know what I'm saying.

00:10:58.581 --> 00:11:04.322
Fix all these traumas and wounds from the past so that I can be the best person I can be for the people you called me to.

00:11:04.322 --> 00:11:09.865
And so, you know, daily I'm thinking you know, how can I be a better Christian?

00:11:09.865 --> 00:11:11.306
How can I be a better woman?

00:11:11.306 --> 00:11:22.809
Because he called me to women, but I had a very strained relationship with my mother and so I'm like okay, so you chose me to speak into women's lives?

00:11:22.809 --> 00:11:23.330
Talk about it.

00:11:23.330 --> 00:11:26.018
I need everything that you want me to give them.

00:11:26.097 --> 00:11:29.956
I need also that's the way it usually goes, though.

00:11:30.410 --> 00:11:36.278
That's the way it usually goes, and I'm like Lord, I keep feeling it at this stage, but he keeps giving it back to me Double, double, double.

00:11:36.278 --> 00:11:46.235
Like you know, I feel one person and then he sends me, you know, 20, 30, 100 more, and so you know it's like this is what he's called me to and I don't want to miss the mark.

00:11:46.235 --> 00:11:50.179
That's what excites me, you know, just being on mark with God.

00:11:50.480 --> 00:11:54.404
Could you say that what you needed, you're giving to other women?

00:11:56.870 --> 00:11:59.514
Could you say that Absolutely what I needed.

00:11:59.514 --> 00:12:12.647
I'm learning to give because, as he fine tunes me, you know, now I'm able to help fine-tune in those areas where he's working on me, so powerful.

00:12:12.647 --> 00:12:18.392
You know what I'm saying.

00:12:18.392 --> 00:12:21.860
A lot of people would say you can't start things or go into things until you're fully healed.

00:12:21.960 --> 00:12:49.224
But from experience I know that God put me out there and I would have never really discovered some areas that I still needed healing in or where I was hurt or where I was guarded and where I had an issue with women that I didn't even know, because my mother, you know she was very abusive, emotionally, physically, verbally, and so you know that woman that was supposed to love me, nurture me, care for me, you know, and God rest her soul.

00:12:49.224 --> 00:12:52.596
I don't have anything against my mother, I love her.

00:12:52.596 --> 00:13:07.724
I love her still to this day, but she had her own issues, she had her own traumas that she, you know absolutely that she put on me, and so it took me a while to really even dig deep and say man, I deal with this.

00:13:07.724 --> 00:13:17.554
You know, I still have this hurt, I still have this pain, I still have this scar, I still have this wound that I covered and thought that time healed all wounds, but it absolutely did not.

00:13:17.554 --> 00:13:25.336
And so, um, it would show in the way I would come across to people, it would show in the way I dealt with people.

00:13:25.437 --> 00:13:33.813
You know it showed and I'm like God, why'd you call me to this?

00:13:33.813 --> 00:13:34.958
And I just keep, you know, I just keep feeling that it.

00:13:34.958 --> 00:13:35.962
I mean he called me to it because I had to see.

00:13:35.962 --> 00:13:37.971
You know, Janita, this is what you deal with, this is what I want you to work on.

00:13:37.971 --> 00:13:47.604
You know what I'm saying and God, in all of his grace and all of his mercy you know what I'm saying Allowed me to see myself and still caught me.

00:13:48.245 --> 00:13:50.307
Wow, that is so powerful.

00:13:50.307 --> 00:13:52.552
This is considered mental health month.

00:13:52.552 --> 00:14:02.360
So when you talk about trauma and, like I said, you never know who's listening, who's dealing with the same thing, how do you walk through that?

00:14:02.360 --> 00:14:05.394
How do you grow through what you've been through?

00:14:05.394 --> 00:14:07.538
You know what I mean, right?

00:14:07.538 --> 00:14:08.561
Yeah, how do you?

00:14:08.561 --> 00:14:12.458
How do you go by day to day dealing with that past trauma?

00:14:13.922 --> 00:14:18.413
um for one, you know, like I said, allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal it to you.

00:14:18.413 --> 00:14:25.173
You know asking, okay, show me, you know, holy Spirit, show me, um, the areas that I need work in, show me my heart.

00:14:25.173 --> 00:14:27.759
You know, know and reading.

00:14:27.759 --> 00:14:33.756
You know reading the word Um, I did, you know, seek out some therapy, um, for a while.

00:14:33.756 --> 00:14:51.419
And a lot of people say, oh, you know Jesus and therapy, as if you know what I'm saying, I, I, I definitely agree that we need, you know we need therapy, but you know, I don't think god was ever against or the church was ever against you know, therapy.

00:14:51.480 --> 00:15:02.157
I think now people are just discovering that you can really go talk to someone, and god is okay with you talking to someone you know, but I absolutely will not go to someone that's not, um, that doesn't know god.

00:15:02.157 --> 00:15:10.215
You can't help me steer my life if you, you know, if you don't know the one that you pray, if you're not connected to the source.

00:15:10.215 --> 00:15:15.538
And so I believe in therapy, I believe in you know talking to someone.

00:15:15.538 --> 00:15:20.539
I believe in you know the Holy Spirit revealing to you, hey, you deal with this.

00:15:20.539 --> 00:15:22.563
Hey, this is why, and get into the root of it.

00:15:22.649 --> 00:15:24.292
You always have to get to the root.

00:15:24.292 --> 00:15:28.057
If you see some fruit in your life, that isn't good, you got to get to the root.

00:15:28.057 --> 00:15:29.679
You can't just pluck the fruit off the tree.

00:15:29.679 --> 00:15:31.241
You got to cut it at the root.

00:15:31.241 --> 00:15:33.225
And so I read a lot of books.

00:15:33.225 --> 00:15:40.871
You know, just all of those things combined.

00:15:40.871 --> 00:15:45.740
And then having people around you that point out things to you, you know, having people that say, hey, you know, you could have dealt with that a little better.

00:15:45.740 --> 00:15:46.822
You know what I'm saying.

00:15:46.822 --> 00:15:49.126
Or you did great.

00:15:49.126 --> 00:15:52.299
You know we need people to tell us that we did a good job also, absolutely.

00:15:52.320 --> 00:15:53.143
Yeah, absolutely.

00:15:53.143 --> 00:15:54.575
And here's another one.

00:15:54.575 --> 00:15:58.116
Not beating yourself up because we can't be perfect Absolutely not.

00:15:58.277 --> 00:15:59.519
Right Right, right right.

00:15:59.519 --> 00:16:04.659
We are our own worst enemy Right, because God's grace is available to us.

00:16:04.659 --> 00:16:11.419
You know his mercies, I knew every morning, and so why am I beating myself up when?

00:16:11.440 --> 00:16:12.644
God, you know, doesn't look at me that way.

00:16:12.644 --> 00:16:15.111
Yeah, yeah, love this conversation, so kind of switching gears.

00:16:15.111 --> 00:16:17.056
I looked at your page.

00:16:17.056 --> 00:16:18.440
I love what you put on.

00:16:18.440 --> 00:16:23.774
When you was identifying the things that you do, you know you put her at the end of everything.

00:16:23.955 --> 00:16:24.676
I love that.

00:16:25.998 --> 00:16:29.361
I saw that you said brand manage her.

00:16:30.003 --> 00:16:30.823
Author her.

00:16:30.964 --> 00:16:32.625
Publish her Pusher.

00:16:32.625 --> 00:16:35.115
I saw all of that Photographer.

00:16:35.115 --> 00:16:36.240
I love that.

00:16:36.279 --> 00:16:38.453
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's powerful.

00:16:38.474 --> 00:16:39.476
What made you do that?

00:16:39.476 --> 00:16:40.279
That's dope.

00:16:40.279 --> 00:16:40.760
I like it.

00:16:42.030 --> 00:16:46.783
Because everything I do is for women, everything I should get that.

00:16:46.783 --> 00:16:55.101
You know, since the beginning I'm like okay, so, and then it just played out like every word was had the.

00:16:55.101 --> 00:16:56.787
You know er, where I could put the h in and say her.

00:16:56.787 --> 00:17:01.999
You know, photographer, because I take photos of women, we're going there.

00:17:01.999 --> 00:17:04.851
You know, I hope women publish their stories, you know.

00:17:04.851 --> 00:17:08.398
So I, um, yeah, it just worked out that way it was.

00:17:08.398 --> 00:17:11.894
You know I'm a creative, so that's very creative.

00:17:11.894 --> 00:17:15.061
You know a lot of people have done that, though, you know.

00:17:15.061 --> 00:17:24.357
So it's not like you know I came up with it, but first time seeing it so yeah, so it's a bunch out there.

00:17:24.637 --> 00:17:25.779
Yeah, I love it.

00:17:25.779 --> 00:17:27.301
You're a photographer.

00:17:27.301 --> 00:17:33.657
I'm learning how to do that, too, in videography, so let's talk about how did you get started with that?

00:17:34.157 --> 00:17:47.003
So I started off and well, long story short, in 2018, god had impressed upon me to leave the workplace, and so I was a deputy sheriff here.

00:17:47.003 --> 00:17:49.047
I moved to Northern Virginia.

00:17:49.047 --> 00:18:05.057
I was working with children in detention and I was in a transition period because I've been saved since I was 16, but I hadn't always had a very personal relationship with God.

00:18:05.057 --> 00:18:05.538
He always.

00:18:05.538 --> 00:18:29.137
He has always kept his hand on me and always preserved me in certain areas of my life, but I had a large portion where I was just out there being crazy, and so I mean, I wasn't I don't want to say that I wasn't too far out there, but you know I was just I was not walking with God, and so, right, right, absolutely.

00:18:29.137 --> 00:19:03.064
And so when I moved to Northern Virginia which I think this was really God getting me away from, you know some things I was dealing with here, and you know I didn't know anyone there I had started a new job and I had, you know, cut some ties with some things here and I just really started to dive deep into God, and so I only worked 14 days out of the month there at that job, and so the other two weeks I would take these long road trips to just nowhere.

00:19:03.064 --> 00:19:11.131
I would just go drive New York, drive to the mountains, drive to the mountains, drive to Atlanta, drive everywhere, and so on these road trips.

00:19:11.131 --> 00:19:16.286
God would meet me in the car on these road trips and I would.

00:19:16.286 --> 00:19:30.821
I fell in love with worship, music, and I would just drive in the car and just worship and, you know, god would speak to me and it was just like that's how I started to develop my relationship back with God.

00:19:30.821 --> 00:19:45.365
And so, on one of those road trips well, it wasn't a one time thing, it was just a deep, heavy, nagging, impressing, you know, impression that God wanted me to leave my job.

00:19:45.365 --> 00:19:46.372
And I'm like, ok, well, what am I?

00:19:46.372 --> 00:19:47.494
What am I gonna do, you know?

00:19:47.494 --> 00:19:58.036
And so it got to the point where it was so strong, you know, I'm like, okay, I'm gonna do it when and he actually gave me a date, and so it was June.

00:19:58.036 --> 00:20:05.272
It was June of that year, um 2018, and he said leave in October, october 12th.

00:20:05.272 --> 00:20:16.318
He gave me the date and so I went to work and in June, I put a notice in to leave in October and, um, they were like, okay, so what?

00:20:16.318 --> 00:20:18.262
You mad today, you know what's going on.

00:20:18.262 --> 00:20:22.262
Talk about you leaving in October, right, you and your feelings today.

00:20:22.262 --> 00:20:23.468
So are you leaving in October?

00:20:23.468 --> 00:20:26.255
Just leave it like, hit us back in October?

00:20:26.255 --> 00:20:28.681
And I'm like, no, I gotta do this now.

00:20:28.681 --> 00:20:31.895
You know, I have to put it in now and make it official, right?

00:20:31.895 --> 00:20:36.272
And so I'm like God, you got all these months to tell me that this just me and not you.

00:20:36.272 --> 00:20:38.336
And so October came, right.

00:20:38.336 --> 00:20:40.801
October came and I left.

00:20:40.902 --> 00:20:48.171
I moved back here to Virginia and I'm not gonna say I didn't have an entrepreneur mind, but I just wanted to live in purpose.

00:20:48.171 --> 00:20:54.332
Whether that was entrepreneurship, whether that was entrepreneurship, whether that was the workplace, whether that was selling all my stuff and go sit on a mountain, I don't know.

00:20:54.332 --> 00:20:58.878
Whatever it looked like, that's what I wanted to do.

00:20:58.878 --> 00:21:04.102
And so when I left, I said, ok, you know what now?

00:21:04.102 --> 00:21:09.881
And so he started putting women in my life who had these ideas for me.

00:21:09.881 --> 00:21:13.998
You know someone I had become friends with upon moving back home.

00:21:13.998 --> 00:21:15.260
They were like you know what you're good at?

00:21:15.260 --> 00:21:18.919
You're good at marketing, because you get all these people to these events.

00:21:18.919 --> 00:21:25.490
You know, all the women come out, you get hundreds of people there at a time and you can start marketing for other people.

00:21:25.490 --> 00:21:27.013
You can start marketing for women.

00:21:27.013 --> 00:21:38.102
So that's how the brand manager came about, because I started helping people market and taking over their social media pages and all of that other stuff, right, and it was just from an idea that someone had given me.

00:21:38.102 --> 00:21:46.134
So now I'm making money from an idea that God gave someone else to give to me, something that I didn't even know I knew how to do for other people.

00:21:46.134 --> 00:21:47.317
Yeah, right.

00:21:47.317 --> 00:21:57.472
And so, um, I was doing that, I had a contract somewhere where I was helping people, you know, do their social media, brand management and things like that.

00:21:57.472 --> 00:22:02.144
And then the contract ended and, um, this was in 2020.

00:22:02.750 --> 00:22:04.575
And I was like, okay, god, what's next?

00:22:04.575 --> 00:22:08.534
I went to sleep and he spoke to me and he said use what's in your hands.

00:22:08.534 --> 00:22:11.113
And I said, well, what does that mean?

00:22:11.113 --> 00:22:13.119
Use what's in my hands.

00:22:13.119 --> 00:22:29.057
And so I had recently bought a camera off of this guy in Maryland for like 300 bucks, only because the women that I was doing their social media for, I would have to send them out to photographers to get their content and to get their photos.

00:22:29.057 --> 00:22:35.172
But they weren't necessarily posed the way I wanted them to pose, or they just didn't look the way I wanted them to look.

00:22:35.172 --> 00:22:39.182
And so I said, well, I'm sorry, I'm going to start learning myself to do it.

00:22:39.182 --> 00:22:43.910
And so I had a friend at the time who was kind of trying to teach me to do it or whatever.

00:22:43.910 --> 00:22:46.854
But he had all this high tech equipment that I I couldn't learn.

00:22:46.854 --> 00:22:52.281
I had this little small $300 Canon camera, and so I had the camera.

00:22:52.281 --> 00:22:56.615
I hadn't used it in a while, and when he said, use what's in your hands, and I'm like what?

00:22:56.615 --> 00:22:59.411
And then all of a sudden the camera was kind of like highlighted to me.

00:22:59.411 --> 00:23:02.734
I'm like, yeah, I don't even know what I'm doing for real.

00:23:02.734 --> 00:23:06.219
And so a contract had just ended.

00:23:06.640 --> 00:23:12.465
I was in need of some money and also asking God what was the next thing?

00:23:12.465 --> 00:23:24.236
And so he said and when I say, he said I know you know how God speaks to you, but for people who don't know the voice of God you know what I'm saying it could be an audible voice.

00:23:24.236 --> 00:23:25.580
He could speak to you in a dream.

00:23:25.580 --> 00:23:28.480
He can speak to you by you know, prophecy.

00:23:28.480 --> 00:23:30.732
It's just so many ways God can speak to you in a dream.

00:23:30.732 --> 00:23:31.635
He can speak to you by you know, um prophecy.

00:23:31.635 --> 00:23:34.163
It's just so many ways god can speak to you, and so I've had all of those experiences.

00:23:34.163 --> 00:23:39.436
And so, just listening to you know the holy spirit, you know, you hear that voicing spirit.

00:23:39.436 --> 00:23:51.515
And, um, I got this idea to do empowerment photos for women because everything I do connects, it all connects, it's all to help women expose their gifts, expose themselves by photography.

00:23:51.535 --> 00:23:53.700
You expose your gifts, your talents.

00:23:53.700 --> 00:23:57.556
You get what you need for your god-given business with the photography, you know.

00:23:57.556 --> 00:24:01.262
And so I said, okay, empowerment photos.

00:24:01.262 --> 00:24:07.593
So I put out a post on social media and because I know what to say, I know how to market, I'm like come on and get your empowerment photos.

00:24:07.593 --> 00:24:10.017
You know, come feel, come, feel beautiful, come in.

00:24:10.017 --> 00:24:12.961
You know, get business photos.

00:24:12.961 --> 00:24:19.391
I said it's time to step out, it's time to step out of your box and, you know, really stand up and be the woman God called you to be.

00:24:19.391 --> 00:24:22.055
And so I put a $50 price tag on it.

00:24:22.115 --> 00:24:27.542
I didn't have a link or website at the time, I think I just put my cash app up there, or something like that.

00:24:27.542 --> 00:24:28.484
I took a nap.

00:24:28.484 --> 00:24:30.335
I woke up I had 100 bookings.

00:24:30.335 --> 00:24:34.855
Wow, I had 100 bookings.

00:24:34.855 --> 00:24:38.441
And I'm like, what am I going to do?

00:24:38.441 --> 00:24:41.412
First of all, I don't know what I'm doing, ok.

00:24:41.412 --> 00:24:43.238
Secondly, wow.

00:24:43.238 --> 00:24:51.159
And so at the time, of course, I didn't have a link, so I'm writing down names like OK, calling people, ok, so you come at this time, you come at this time.

00:24:51.690 --> 00:24:59.236
And so I set up downtown Norfolk in one spot right in front of the Icon apartment building, and I set up there.

00:24:59.236 --> 00:25:10.291
I was there the entire summer and I was booked almost every single day from a $50 empowerment photo shoot and so people would come out there.

00:25:10.291 --> 00:25:11.671
I had people lined up.

00:25:11.671 --> 00:25:18.215
It would be 10, 15 people out there at a time and they would all be talking to each other and getting to know one another.

00:25:18.215 --> 00:25:22.570
I mean I was out there praying for people, people were praying for me.

00:25:22.570 --> 00:25:27.421
I mean it was just a whole experience for the most part out there and I never stopped, and so I'm still doing photography for me.

00:25:27.421 --> 00:25:30.643
I mean it was just a whole experience for the most part out there and I never stopped, and so I'm still doing photography for women.

00:25:31.064 --> 00:25:31.704
You know what I'm saying.

00:25:31.704 --> 00:25:40.255
But that's how it started, just really got just giving me that idea, and I didn't know much about photography.

00:25:40.255 --> 00:25:44.316
You know, people tell me all the time how beautiful my pictures are.

00:25:44.316 --> 00:25:47.355
I mean, you know, beautiful is subjective.

00:25:47.355 --> 00:25:48.247
You know what I'm saying.

00:25:48.247 --> 00:25:51.054
However, you know, I'm like if you only knew.

00:25:51.054 --> 00:25:55.392
I still really don't know what I'm doing.

00:25:55.392 --> 00:25:57.196
I'm like if you only knew.

00:25:57.196 --> 00:25:58.884
They're like you've been doing this for a long time.

00:25:58.884 --> 00:26:01.269
I was like, no, I have not.

00:26:01.269 --> 00:26:08.198
And so um, but yeah, and so that really transitioned into the magazine, you know.

00:26:08.358 --> 00:26:11.749
And so power 100 god spoke to me at the power 100.

00:26:12.048 --> 00:26:17.808
So god spoke to me about doing the magazine and, um, you know, I used the photography for the.

00:26:17.808 --> 00:26:28.528
For that now, because I, you know, love being the photographer, the editor, you know, just putting everything together and having the know-how and creativity to do it myself.

00:26:28.887 --> 00:26:30.090
Yeah, I love it.

00:26:30.090 --> 00:26:37.867
Wow, you never know where you'll end up if you just take that first step right, right, right, absolutely wow.

00:26:37.867 --> 00:26:40.609
What do you see yourself in the next five years with all of?

00:26:41.290 --> 00:26:47.255
Five years, or maybe two, Two years, so in two years.

00:26:47.255 --> 00:27:03.298
Well, my goal for Power 100 magazine is to travel around the world, you know, just interviewing women on their stories, and I believe that's a way of getting people really to heal.

00:27:03.298 --> 00:27:09.482
You know, we're in a time now where you hear a lot of stories, a lot of people doing interviews, a lot of people doing podcasts.

00:27:09.482 --> 00:27:15.311
It's just like you know a thing that people say, oh saturated, everybody doing the podcast.

00:27:15.311 --> 00:27:19.210
But I believe God is really wanting people to overcome.

00:27:19.210 --> 00:27:23.665
You know what I'm saying by our testimony, right, and so it's like absolutely.

00:27:23.665 --> 00:27:31.111
And so as you talk about the things that you've gone through and the things that God has healed you from, then you heal the next person, you know.

00:27:31.111 --> 00:27:41.576
So I think a lot of those are popping up now and it's on our hearts to do that, because it's time for people to come out of hiding and really share what God has done.

00:27:41.576 --> 00:27:42.778
You know what I'm saying.

00:27:42.778 --> 00:27:45.559
It brings glory to God for one, For two.

00:27:45.559 --> 00:27:46.941
It continues to free you.

00:27:46.941 --> 00:28:12.388
When you continue to talk about what you've been healed from and what you've been delivered from, you're in a constant state of deliverance from it because you're not hiding it and you're able to free other people and you create is just to simply, you know, travel and to really gather stories.

00:28:12.388 --> 00:28:17.166
You know, and really bless women with the things that I offer with the magazine.

00:28:17.287 --> 00:28:20.134
I want it to be, you know, a household name.

00:28:20.134 --> 00:28:20.876
You know.

00:28:20.876 --> 00:28:25.289
I want really God to shed a light on it for people to see.

00:28:25.289 --> 00:28:29.576
Hey, you know, literature isn't dead, Magazines aren't dead.

00:28:29.576 --> 00:28:33.730
You know, a lot of people have cut their magazines off because, like, oh, no one's reading anymore.

00:28:33.730 --> 00:28:35.516
I don't believe that to be true.

00:28:35.516 --> 00:28:37.971
You know, I don't believe people aren't buying magazines.

00:28:37.971 --> 00:28:39.170
They'll buy the right magazine.

00:28:39.170 --> 00:28:45.795
Yeah, you know, something that's going to add value to them, you know, and so that's it.

00:28:45.795 --> 00:28:47.298
I just want to add value to the world.

00:28:47.698 --> 00:28:48.298
Amazing.

00:28:48.318 --> 00:28:48.660
That's it.

00:28:50.205 --> 00:28:51.309
So where can people find you?

00:28:51.309 --> 00:28:52.555
You know social media.

00:28:53.505 --> 00:29:06.977
So people can find me real easy on Facebook, janita R Castile, and on my Power 100 magazine page, and also on Instagram at PowerBag100.

00:29:07.664 --> 00:29:08.568
Wow, amazing.

00:29:08.568 --> 00:29:16.269
So I'm really glad that I had a chance to have this conversation with you before you travel all over the world Africa, asia.

00:29:16.269 --> 00:29:22.007
I can say I had an interview with her Catch me now.

00:29:22.027 --> 00:29:23.392
catch me now, you know.

00:29:23.814 --> 00:29:27.855
Yeah, as we wrap it up, two quick questions.

00:29:27.855 --> 00:29:35.436
Janita, what would you say to the younger you if you could go back right now and say anything to the younger Janita?

00:29:35.964 --> 00:29:37.531
Jeez, would you want me to cry?

00:29:37.531 --> 00:29:38.607
Would you want me?

00:29:38.607 --> 00:29:39.109
What is this?

00:29:39.109 --> 00:29:40.535
A therapy session?

00:29:40.535 --> 00:29:42.531
Oh, would you have just sprung that on me.

00:29:42.531 --> 00:29:45.355
You could have gave me that beforehand and told me you were going to ask me that.

00:29:45.355 --> 00:29:46.886
Just sprung that on me.

00:29:46.886 --> 00:29:49.771
You could have gave me that beforehand and told me you're gonna ask me that.

00:29:49.771 --> 00:29:50.614
Man, I listen, that's a loaded.

00:29:50.634 --> 00:29:53.739
That's a loaded question wow, because she's powerful now.

00:29:53.739 --> 00:29:58.190
So would you change anything?

00:29:58.690 --> 00:30:05.378
oh yeah, I absolutely, um, would change things, to be honest with you.

00:30:05.378 --> 00:30:07.480
Ah, man, that's sensitive.

00:30:07.480 --> 00:30:13.315
I can't even say right now, I can't even say Gotcha, I can't even say.

00:30:13.595 --> 00:30:15.258
Gotcha, wow, all right.

00:30:15.258 --> 00:30:21.970
Last question If you could describe the Janita today, right now, what would you say about her?

00:30:23.094 --> 00:30:35.266
Hmm, so the Janita today she is powerful, but not powerful because of my own doing, because of my own strength.

00:30:35.266 --> 00:30:42.871
She's powerful because she's found the one who gives her power and that's Jesus Christ.

00:30:42.871 --> 00:30:57.898
You know, she is confident, she is courageous because she's had to walk through some things and she is growing, yep.

00:30:58.319 --> 00:30:59.059
And evolving.

00:30:59.059 --> 00:31:01.401
I love it and evolving, I love it.

00:31:01.401 --> 00:31:04.363
Thank you so much for being a part of this episode.

00:31:04.363 --> 00:31:08.449
Man, I'm excited to have you on.

00:31:08.449 --> 00:31:09.490
So thanks again, thanks again.

00:31:09.510 --> 00:31:26.580
anything you want to say before we get off, you want to say to the listening audience I, I just appreciate you for you know, calling me and asking me to to be a part and, um, you know, my message to everyone all the time is to seek God for your assignment.

00:31:26.601 --> 00:31:35.056
I believe we all are put here on earth for a particular reason and I think we spend life searching for that reason.

00:31:35.056 --> 00:31:39.829
We explore a lot of things searching for that reason.

00:31:39.829 --> 00:31:53.215
But when you seek, you know, when you seek God, he'll give you that reason and he'll send you out on an assignment, and that assignment is vital to your life and is vital to the lives around you.

00:31:53.215 --> 00:32:04.194
And your calling your assignment, your purpose, is connected to many other people who are waiting on you to step up to the call, to step up to answer and say, yes, I'll go.

00:32:04.194 --> 00:32:18.996
You know, and so I put a charge out there for people to really open their eyes and see that, no matter what you've gone through, no matter what you've experienced, no matter how fast life is going, that God has something for you to do.

00:32:18.996 --> 00:32:33.135
And I just want everyone to know that you have purpose and you have meaning and you have value and the world needs what you have inside of you wow, yeah, amazing wisdom, amazing wisdom.

00:32:33.395 --> 00:32:35.967
Thank you so much, janita castell, for being on.

00:32:35.967 --> 00:32:37.471
Let's just talk about it podcast.

00:32:37.471 --> 00:32:39.015
I really appreciate you thank you.

00:32:39.276 --> 00:32:39.817
Thanks again.

00:32:39.817 --> 00:32:44.413
Wow, what an amazing conversation.

00:32:44.413 --> 00:32:46.519
Shout out to Janita for having this dialogue with me.

00:32:46.519 --> 00:33:03.659
You know Janita shared so many amazing things in our conversation today, but the one thing that I love, that's woven throughout this whole conversation, was her ability to not allow the obstacles she experienced in her past to regulate nor determine her future success as a photographer and founder of Power Magazine.

00:33:03.659 --> 00:33:06.673
So shout out to you, janita, for being an inspiration to us.
